作为我国历史上的名窑之一，耀州窑的烧造史绵延八百多年。它起于唐代，兴于五代，在北宋时期达到鼎盛，金代继续烧制，直至元末明初才逐渐停火。其标志性产品刻花青瓷，被赞为“巧如范金，精比琢玉”，享有“北方刻花青瓷之冠”的称号，早在宋代便已闻名海内外。
这座博物馆坐落在全国重点文物保护单位——耀州窑遗址内。这里曾是著名的“十里窑场”，留下了极为珍贵的陶瓷文化遗产。考古发掘面积超过一万平方米，出土文物碎片达300多万件，清理出的作坊和窑炉有200余座。无论是发掘规模、出土数量，还是遗迹保存的完整度及文化内涵的丰富性，在世界瓷窑遗址中都属罕见，堪称一座巨大的陶瓷文化宝库。
目前的耀州窑博物馆是国内规模最大的古陶瓷遗址专题博物馆，集遗址展示、文物陈列与工艺演示于一体。遗址保护厅分为三个部分：“唐代三彩作坊、窑炉”、“宋代制瓷作坊、窑炉”以及“金代制瓷作坊群”，直观呈现了当年的生产规模与工艺流程。主馆基本陈列设在七个展室中，分为三部分。“耀州窑史陈列”展出千余件文物，回顾该窑辉煌的历史；“示范参与室”让观众亲手体验陶瓷制作；“参考研究室”则陈列千余片各类标本，供专业人士、院校师生及专家学者研究比对。博物馆期望成为大家追溯历史、获取知识的课堂，感受美感、陶冶情操的圣殿，以及连接过去与未来的桥梁。
